Every two years, it seems more and more America is in a rinse and repeat pattern as congressional elections near. For those in Virginia, it may feel like a similar pattern. Last year, then-Republican gubernatorial candidate Glen Youngin was down in the polls significantly to Democratic candidate Terry McAuliffe. In the campaign’s final three weeks, Youngkin caught his opponent and defeated him by a healthy margin in a state with trended blue for a decade.
Here we are again. Over the summer months, Republican pundits and voters expressed frustration with their chosen candidates. After the primary elections, GOP candidates went silent. In the vacuum, the Left blasted away. The media pounced and suggested Democrats were suddenly and surprisingly ahead. They continue to indicate that Democrats would keep the Senate and possibly even win the House in a year where that’s supposed to be impossible considering the state of the economy and Joe Biden’s abysmally approval ratings.
Now that the election is only six weeks away, voters appear to be waking up from their slumber. As the issues come into focus, Republicans could be headed for a decisive win. How do I come to that conclusion?
How Could Republicans Win Decisively?
In late June, Democrats and the liberal media saw what they described as a profound opportunity to keep their flailing majorities. The belief was abortion would be their saving grace. Yet, is that accurate if we just focus on this issue?
The short answer is no. It’s not accurate. Democrats and the media believe abortion is an issue that only motivates their base. If that were true, it might make a significant difference. In late July, a Marquette Law School National Poll showed little change among the electorate after the Supreme Court overturned Roe. It showed that Republicans INCREASED their enthusiasm to get out the vote and cast a ballot in November after the Dobbs decision.
The enthusiasm gap was a whopping 18% in favor of the GOP. More shockingly, running counter to the liberal narrative, the poll showed an increase in certainty for voting “in favor of overturning Roe” and a slight decline for those who opposed the high courts ruling.
That’s not all… On Sunday, September 25, an ABC News/Washington Post poll revealed that crime surpassed abortion as an election issue. How did the numbers stack up:
- Economy – 89%
- Education – 77%
- Inflation – 76%
- Crime – 69%
- Abortion – 62%
When asked who voters trusted to do a better job on critical issues, 52% favored Republicans, and 38% said, Democrats.
On illegal immigration, a new CBS/YouGov poll showed that 51% of registered voters approve of sending illegal immigrants to Democratic sanctuary cities. Additionally, 88% of those who agree say the tactic effectively gets voters’ attention about illegal immigration.
So, if abortion isn’t going to lead the way to victory as Democrats hoped, what will?
Anger is All Democratic Candidates Have to Run On
The fact is, Democrats have nothing but anger to run on, and that’s a bad position to be in heading into a major election. Has anyone noticed that Democratic campaigns are talking much about issues? Instead, they are focusing on Donald Trump or calling their GOP opponents extremists. Biden and Pelosi continue to harp on insurrectionists and MAGA Republicans.
It’s not working. Voters aren’t buying the narrative and for a good reason. Many Democrats who know a Republican may disagree with their politics, but most Americans don’t see one another as the enemy. If we did, there would be many more problems than we have today.
Still, I routinely converse with people on the Left in various Facebook groups. Anger is the tone of the day. I don’t expect it will get better if Republicans win the House and take back the Senate.
It’s hard to blame them for being angry as America rejects their socialist far-left agenda. Still, let’s hope we can persuade some to come back to America’s roots. All we need are a few courageous heroes willing to engage with reason and logic, sprinkled in with some genuine passion.
